Access control in Europe’s largest aquarium: Our master keying project at Oceanogràfic de Valencia
Our equipment and security projects go far beyond traditional hospitality. Large public infrastructures and high-traffic leisure centers require extremely precise technical solutions to ensure their smooth daily operation. Today, we present an exciting challenge we carried out at one of the most emblematic venues in the Valencian Community: the comprehensive review and master keying plan for Oceanogràfic de Valencia.
The Setting: An architectural ecosystem of colossal proportions

Integrated into the City of Arts and Sciences complex, Oceanogràfic is not just Europe's largest aquarium, but a true internal city dedicated to marine research, conservation, and education. Its cutting-edge facilities house thousands of animals from over 500 different species, distributed across various buildings representing the planet's primary marine ecosystems.
Beyond the spectacular public areas visited by millions every year, Oceanogràfic features an immense labyrinth of restricted areas: maintenance corridors, water filtration zones, laboratories, veterinary areas, executive offices, and staff locker rooms.
The Project: Organizing chaos in a labyrinth of access points
Managing security in a venue with hundreds of doors and hundreds of employees with different roles is a top-level logistical challenge. Over the years, the complex faced a common problem in large infrastructures: the uncontrolled proliferation of keys and a lack of clear records regarding who had access to which areas.
The park's maintenance and security team carried heavy and inefficient key rings, while access control to critical zones (such as animal quarantine areas or heavy machinery rooms) urgently needed optimization. The goal was clear: audit the status of access points and create a logical, hierarchical, and secure system.
Our Solution: Comprehensive audit and personalized master keying plan
Our track record in integrating security solutions and our experience installing everything from high-tech locks to door accessories allowed us to approach this challenge with a global vision. The project was divided into two key phases:
Audit and cylinder review: Our technical team conducted an exhaustive mapping of the entire complex, checking each existing cylinder (lock barrel) one by one. Those showing wear from salinity and intensive use were identified and replaced with high-security cylinders prepared to withstand the demanding environmental conditions of the aquarium.
Design and implementation of the Master Keying Plan: We studied the venue's organizational structure to design a custom access flow chart. We created a hierarchical system where, for example, the general manager can open all facilities with a single "Master Key," biology leads only access their specific pavilions, and technical maintenance staff have keys that only open machine rooms, blocking their access to offices or safes.
The Result: Operational efficiency and guaranteed security

The implementation of our master keying plan has completely transformed the daily operations of Oceanogràfic de Valencia. We have drastically simplified the volume of keys handled by staff, streamlining responses to any incidents and improving employee comfort.
Furthermore, the complex's management now has absolute control over the security of its premises, protecting both the well-being of marine species and the technical integrity of the facilities. This project demonstrates that intelligent planning in locking systems is the invisible heart that keeps large complexes running safely.
